How to Choose a Hemp Fanny Pack You Will Actually Wear
The fanny pack came back, refused to leave, and quietly became the most practical thing most of us own. Phone, keys, cards, lip balm, headphones — out of your pockets, off your shoulder, done. But there is a real gap between a belt bag you reach for every morning and one that ends up in a drawer by March. It comes down to four decisions.
1. Get the strap length right
This is the one people get wrong. Worn on the hip, a fanny pack needs roughly 90–130 cm of adjustable webbing. Worn crossbody over the chest — how most people actually wear them now — you want up to 150 cm. Anything shorter looks fine on a model and cuts into your ribs on a real body in a winter coat.
Check the buckle too. One you can release single-handed while holding coffee is worth more than any design detail.
2. Decide what “enough space” means for you
- Minimal (1–1.5 L). Phone, cards, keys. Flat against the body, invisible under a jacket. Good for concerts, markets and travel days when you also carry a backpack.
- Everyday (2–3 L). Adds a small bottle, notebook, sunglasses, snacks. The size most people should buy.
- Sling (4–6 L). Chest-bag territory — tablet, camera, packed lunch. Replaces a small backpack entirely.
Be honest about the bottle. If you carry 750 ml every day, a 1.5 L bag will disappoint you within a week.
3. Look at where the zips sit
A good waist bag opens along the top curve, not the front face — front-facing zips spill their contents when you unzip while walking. A flat back pocket against your body is where your phone or passport belongs. A small internal key clip saves genuine daily frustration.
Metal zip pulls, again. Plastic ones snap in the cold.
4. Feel the fabric — and what is behind it
Hemp canvas in the 280–350 g/m² range is the sweet spot: firm enough to hold shape when empty, soft enough not to dig in. Lighter fabric collapses into a sad pouch; heavier fabric adds bulk you feel on your hip.
Hemp has an advantage synthetics cannot match — it is breathable and naturally antimicrobial, so a bag pressed against your body all summer does not develop a smell. Look for a water-resistant membrane behind the canvas as well, so a sudden shower is not a problem. More on why the fibre behaves this way in our guide to hemp accessories.
How to wear it without overthinking
On the hip, bag slightly forward, reads classic and keeps things reachable. Crossbody high on the chest is the current default and spreads weight better on long walking days. Low across the back looks relaxed but you cannot get into it without taking it off — fine at a festival, annoying at an airport.
Want one bag for all three? Buy the everyday size with the longest webbing you can find and shorten it. You can take a strap in; you cannot invent one.
Where to start
The BYHEMP hemp fanny packs sit in that everyday size with long adjustable webbing and solid zippers — the MOODY is the unisex crossbody most people end up wearing daily. Handmade in Ukraine, hemp outside, water-resistant membrane inside.
